While we’re talking about a principled government, what is the difference between that and one that has much power, a huge infrastructure with many government employed citizens and so many cracks? Dana emphasized the most important loss to real life people and that is community. When needed, community can nurture and maintain some self-respect and dignity; without annihilation by strangers. Strangers who so very often will excuse their tasks at hand with "my hands are tied".

Update: I just wanted to highlight Shawna’s comment, because I think her point is the closest to a real solution: community. Community is what can most effectively protect us from acts of state aggression and protect children from abuse, either through detection or even prevention by helping struggling parents remain connected and find support.

Judy of Consent of the Governed has been in the midst with the presidential campaign and I’ve enjoyed reading her experiences. I saw this at the latest Republican debate and it seemed the heads went down as Dr. Paul, also known as Dr. No, addressed the question. Then those heads popped right back up because they’re pretty polished up that way regarding ‘appearances.
