Being our local historical quarterly's editor gives me wonderful opportunities to meet incredible people. I've grown up with or around many people who rarely make headlines because they're busy living a good life as farmers or community advocates in our little farm town.
But one of our World War 2 veterans was interviewed last week during a regional spotlight on our town and it would touch anyone. These fellows were diligent in sharing the local veterans' stories and Farmer City has a treasure in Their Roles Remembered.
One of the authors, John Dawson, gave a couple of our local homeschooling families a living history lesson sharing his experiences and answering our questions about his World War 2 experiences. We've found those stories and museums are the most engaging and best way to learn history and our culture, even while it means tramping through various cemeteries.
